Labour
County Councillors are backing local residents who have contacted the
Express and Echo regarding the extremely high bus fares charged by
Stagecoach, which discriminate against families wishing to use buses
within the city.
The Labour government’s scheme to give
free bus travel to over-60s is a huge benefit, but for others bus fares
in Exeter are extremely expensive with families and those on low
incomes being hit particularly hard. A family with a car are
not
likely to consider using the bus because it is presently far more
costly.
Labour councillor Jill Owen said: “there are various
offers available for bus passengers, but Stagecoach do not help
families”. She has asked the company to consider
introducing a family ticket for Exeter. “As County
Councillors we
support the idea of encouraging people to use the bus rather than the
car, as this reduces congestion and helps the environment and it is
disappointing that Stagecoach can't be more helpful”.
