National Award for Cllr Olwen Foggin

March 1, 2012 in Heavitree, Whipton Barton

Exeter Labour Party is proud to report that Devon County Councillor Olwen Foggin has won the Age UK Pride of Place Award at the 2012 C’llr Achievement Awards.

These national awards recognise councillors who have made significant contributions to local democracy and to their communities, and the Age UK prize is given to a councillor who has made a particular difference to older people.

Explaining the judges’ decision, co-organisers the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) said;

“Cllr Foggin has consistently championed the interests of older residents in Devon since being elected to the county council in 2005. She has demonstrated a clear commitment to engaging with local groups and listening to the concerns of older people, before ensuring that these concerns inform the council’s decisions at every level.”

This year alone Olwen has supported a range of projects and activities for older people, including Age UK’s Men in Sheds project, Heavitree Pop In Social Group, a Christmas event for residents of Whipton Barton House care home (pictured), Westbank’s Memory Cafes and the Whipton Community Hospital League of Friends. Exeter Labour Party would like to congratulate Olwen on her well-deserved win and for her ongoing efforts to promote the voice of older people in Exeter and to improve our communities for their older residents.

Heavitree Community Association Event

November 4, 2011 in Heavitree

Just before the weather gets too cold we can just remind you of what a great event the Heavitree Community Association in Heavitree Park was and that luckily August Bank Holiday Monday saw glorious sunshine.

People flocked to the Fun Day in droves – Labour had loads of visitors to our stall doing the quiz and picking up jelly beans with chopsticks. Any child who could pick up at least one jelly bean got a free chocolate or other sweets. The quiz theme – of guessing the road name from which photos of Heavitree Church Tower were taken – was hugely popular.

Our main prize of £20 of Co-op vouchers was announced over the PA system to the entire Park. All the money we received in entrance fees was donated to Hospiscare. At times we were so busy there was hardly any room in our gazebo for us!

We would like to thank Heavitree Community Association for organising a wonderful event  and all the other organisations and groups  who took part and look forward to next years fun day.

Fore Street Consultation Results

February 27, 2012 in Heavitree

Following a request for ideas local people have proposed improvements such as tidying up shabby buildings, tree planting, a mural and local history interpretation boards. An exhibition of the proposals was held outside Nat-West bank in Fore Street, Heavitree on Friday 24th June from 12pm to 5pm and Saturday 25th June from 9.30am to 12.30pm. A questionnaire was available for people to have their say regarding the improvements they would most like to see.

Over 250 people completed a questionnaire. The preferred improvements were tree planting (76% choosing this for their first, second or third choice) and taking action to require the Gun and Sports shop to make improvements to the state of their building (54%). The City Council will now work with the Heavitree Community Association and Heavitree Traders to progress the favoured improvements
