Labour Councillors Block Lib Dem Rent Rise
Exeter's Labour councillors have been successful in blocking an inflation
busting 6.2% rent rise planned by the Liberal Democrats.
In January the
City Council’s ruling Liberal Democrat group voted for a 6.2% rent rise
for Exeter’s
Council tenants, rejecting a Labour proposal that rents should only
rise by 3.1%.
But following
lobbying of Housing Minister Margaret Beckett by local Labour
councillors the council has been forced to halve the proposed Lib Dem
increase.
Labour Group
leader Pete Edwards said: “This a victory for common sense.
In attempting to impose an inflation busting rent rise in the current
economic climate showed the utter contempt the Liberal Democrats have
for Exeter’s
Council tenants, and have again highlighted the shambolic way in which
they have run our city since they took power by the back door last May. I
applaud Margaret Beckett for overruling the Lib Dems plans.”
