In
November 2008 Lib Dem run Exeter City Council backed the principle of a
new Park and Ride site on the edge of Alphington when they supported a
bid for funding made by Devon County Council (then also controlled by
the Lib Dems).
Fifteen sites were considered for the facility, with the best option being adjacent to the A30 interchange. But, with the staggering hypocrisy we have come to expect of the local Lib Dems, councillors in Alphington are now opposing the proposal. Labour Group leader Pete Edwards commented: “As is so often the case the Lib Dems ‘talk the talk’ about green policies like Park and Ride, but when it is in their own back yard they suddenly adopt a ‘not at any cost’ attitude.
There is good evidence that successful Park and Ride sites intercept 15-20% of cars on the corridors they serve. If this was to happen to the Alphington corridor it would benefit all the residents in the West Exe area whose lives are made intolerable by the volume of traffic and air pollution on one of Exeter busiest roads.
