Eliot Wright: Your candidate on 3 May 2012
I have been a member of the Labour Party for over 40 years. I moved from Bournville to Topsham six years ago, following an enjoyable and rewarding career as a scientist and a school teacher. I am married with two grown children working in the public sector: one a hospital doctor and one a secondary teacher. I have two grandchildren aged 6 and 3.
Since retiring I have been very involved in community activities, including Topsham Community Association, Topsham Society, Topsham Allotments, Topsham Sailing Club and Estuary Players. I am also a River Commissioner. Working in the community brings me into contact with a wide range of people and a wide range of issues. I am particularly interested in the local environment, public transport and leisure and learning opportunities. These are crucial to the development of happy and productive communities.
It is important that local issues are identified by local citizens and acted upon by representatives who are elected locally. Whilst the perception of some is that Topsham is a relatively wealthy community, we do have many older people and others who are struggling with financial, health and housing difficulties. I believe that, with colleagues in the Labour Party, I am best placed to prioritise the protection of public services, the safeguarding of the environment and the development of facilities which benefit families, individuals and businesses alike.
