Tony Wardle: Your candidate on 3 May 2012
It is an honour to have been selected again to stand as the Labour Party Candidate in Whipton Barton.
I was born and bred in Exeter and was an elected union representative in the public services and wider trade union movement for 40 years. I continue involvement in the trade union movement as Treasurer of the Exeter TUC. I know from this, and from being a councillor for Whipton Barton Ward on Exeter City Council since 2008, the great pressures on working people facing unemployment and the erosion of pensions and terms and conditions.
It is a real struggle for many families to find decent housing and maintain a decent standard of living. For retired people, similar pressures apply, while younger people are seeing their life chances being stripped away by this Tory-led government. To me the big issues in Exeter are affordable housing, particularly with the planned rapid expansion of the area over the next 15 years, and the need for decent transport of all kinds on an environmentally sustainable basis.
I look forward to continuing to meet local residents over the coming months, and to hearing your ideas and hopes for the future of Whipton.
