Exeter Labour Party is pleased to announce the decision by the Labour led Executive of Exeter City Council to sell Clifton Hill for the construction of 100% affordable extra care homes. This exciting development will provide vital housing opportunities for our community while ensuring that we maintain the green space and leisure facilities that residents value, including the ski slope and driving range.

Cllr Marina Asvachin, Lead Councillor for Housing and Homeless Prevention, said, “This project represents another significant step forward in addressing the housing crisis in Exeter. Extra care housing is essential for our growing population, offering support for individuals to maintain their independence while receiving the assistance they need.”

The new homes will serve those who benefit from on-site support, freeing up NHS bed spaces through the collaboration with Devon County Council. This initiative not only addresses immediate housing needs but also aids in enhancing the wellbeing of our community.

Cllr Matt Vizard, Labour City Councillor for Newtown & St Leonards, said: “I welcome the decision to move forward with the sale of the Clifton Hill site for a 100% affordable extra care development. This underlines the Labour-run Council’s determination to balance the need for affordable new homes with protecting green spaces, while upholding our policy not to sell council-owned land for student accommodation.

The extra care proposal, supported by Devon County Council’s Adult Social Care, meets a significant housing sector need suitable for our area with its proximity to Belmont Park and the city centre. I look forward to meeting with the developer and helping to secure ongoing engagement with the Newtown community.”

We are proud that this supplements other recent social or affordable developments in the city, such as those at Exmouth Junction and Hamlin Gardens, showcasing Exeter Labour’s commitment to building affordable and council homes. This project marks yet another chapter in our ongoing efforts to tackle housing challenges, demonstrating our dedication while other parties continue to lack clear policies and solutions.

In keeping with our promises, we remain committed to protecting council land from being sold for student developments, ensuring that we prioritize community needs over short-term financial gains.

As we move forward, we thank the residents of Exeter for their continued support. Labour is listening and working hard to build a better future for all. Together, we can ensure that all members of our community have access to the quality housing they deserve
