St David's - Exeter City Council Candidate
I am delighted to have been selected as the Labour candidate to represent St David’s at the forthcoming City Council elections on 6th May.
I have represented St David’s as County Councillor since May 2017. During that time, I have spoken up for the people of St David’s and campaigned on issues that matter. These have included pushing for the County’s carbon neutrality target to be brought forward from 2050 to 2030 in line with the target set by the Labour-led City Council.
In the last 12 months, we have all had to deal with the profound challenge presented by Covid-19. Many residents of St David’s, have suffered. There is no room for complacency and I will take every opportunity I can to press for more support and help for those who need it, creating the best possible circumstances to help residents of St David’s and Haven Banks recover from the pandemic.
I am proud of the actions that I have supported so far in response to the pandemic. I pushed hard for new safe cycling routes put in to ensure the safety of our essential workers, as well as widened pedestrian routes to enable social distancing. I have also strongly supported the principle that local people should be consulted on how the environmental benefits of the temporary schemes might be adapted and developed in the future beyond the pandemic. In time, these could provide opportunities for outdoor seating, for green spaces, and the potential for long term benefits for our city.
The pandemic has highlighted inadequacies in our social care system and how we look after and protect our most vulnerable citizens, as well as the need for improved services for mental health and well-being. These are all issues that I will campaign on if I am elected in May. Due to the ongoing restrictions of the pandemic, I am not able to listen to your concerns on the doorstep and I am worried that some of your voices are being lost. If you have any issues that you would like to raise with me, please do contact me.
