Last week, a meeting took place to try and address issues that face communities surrounding the University, and its growing number of students. Cllr Luke Sills convened a meeting with the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sir Steve Smith, along with local Cllrs Dan Gottschalk, Keith Owen and Jill Owen. Also present where the respective community group leaders from St David’s and St James and Rory Cunningham, the University’s Community Liaison Officer.

The meeting was very productive and each party had the opportunity to put forward their concerns regarding the Universities planned expansion, and the implications that has on residents of Exeter. The Vice-Chancellor was able to reassure communities that planned future expansion of the University is very minimal and that the University is always prepared to work with the Exeter City Council and local community groups to try and resolve issues that arise as a result of students living in the city. Steve Smith was asked about how both the council and university could work together to find a solution to domestic issues, such as bin collection and waste, transient noise levels and concerns over student parking in residential areas. We are currently working on strategies to help rectify these growing concerns and will keep residents updated with our progress. The community groups and ward councillors that attended were very pleased to have met with the University’s senior team and look forward to a discussion again in the future about these issues.
