On a national basis a multibillion-pound financial crisis caused by rising inflation could make local services unviable and even lead to local authorities going bankrupt.

However, Labour led Exeter City Council has worked extremely hard to meet the challenge and has delivered a balanced budget for the year ahead without stopping any services or closing facilities.

Phil Bialyk as Labour Leader of the Council, presented his budget speech

“Setting a balanced budget for the year ahead has been extremely challenging and we have had to make tough choices.

 

As Leader of the Council, along with my portfolio holders, we need to look at the city as a whole and our priorities.

 

It’s worth remembering that we have seen a reduction in central government funding of more than 60 pence in every pound over the last 12 years.”
